If you’re just getting started, you’ll need to get to know your stick and how it works. After all, the stick is your only true connection you’ll have with the ball. A field hockey stick consists of several important parts:
The handle:
This is the part of the stick that you hold onto. It is usually made of wood, plastic, or composite material and is shaped to fit comfortably in your hand.
The head:
This is the wide part of the stick that is used to hit the ball. It is usually made of composite material and has a shallow curve to help lift the ball off the ground. The head is shaped like a hook – made up of the toe and the heel.
The throat:
This is the part of the stick where the head and handle meet. Some sticks have a “hook” shape at the throat to help with ball control.
The blade:
This is the flat part of the stick that makes contact with the ball. It is usually made of composite material and is reinforced with fiberglass or Kevlar to make it stronger.
The kick point:
This is the point on the blade where it is most flexible. The kick point can be high, medium, or low, depending on the player’s preference and playing style.
